Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern Munich welcome SC Freiburg to the Allianz Arena on Sunday afternoon (15:30 CET). The German record champions have let very few points slip against SCF in Munich, but the visitors from the Black Forest are currently in their best ever form in the Bundesliga. 1. Freiburg still winless in Munich
Bayern won 3-1 at the Allianz Arena in their last meeting with Freiburg on Matchday 33 of last season. Joshua Kimmich opened the scoring for the hosts.
Bayern have not lost any of their 20 Bundesliga home games against Freiburg, with the Breisgau club taking a paltry three points from their previous visits to the Bavarian state capital. Wolfsburg are the only side who Bayern have played more often on home turf in the Bundesliga without losing once (24 times). In fact, FCB have won 15 of their last 16 home encounters against SCF, a 1-1 draw on 3 November 2018 being the exception.
2. Bayern dominate head-to-head
Bayern also have a clear advantage in the overall head-to-head record, with just one defeat in their last 34 Bundesliga matches against Christian Streich’s side (W26 D7) – a 2-1 reverse at Freiburg in May 2015, when FCB were already confirmed as champions.
3. Top of table against top of form table
The defending champions currently lead the Bundesliga standings on 33 points. However, if you just took the last five matchdays, the visitors from Freiburg would be top of the table with a perfect record of five consecutive wins. The 5-0 success over Köln last Saturday was their highest Bundesliga win during Streich’s ten-year reign in charge.
4. Formidable at home
The Reds are unbeaten at home in the league since losing 2-1 against Bayer Leverkusen in December 2019, winning 14 of their 17 top-flight outings at the Allianz Arena. A win over Freiburg on Sunday would also see Hansi Flick’s side retain top spot in the home table.
5. Two stats promise high-scoring contest
Leon Goretzka netted Bayern’s 46th goal in the Bundesliga this season in the 3-2 defeat at Mönchengladbach.
With 46 goals after 15 matchdays, Bayern boast the best Bundesliga attack in over 40 years, since Köln notched 47 goals in the 1977/78 campaign. The Bavarians have scored in each of their last 28 league games – by far the longest run in the league. Their opponents from the Black Forest, meanwhile, have netted at least twice in all of their last six matches, and their tally of 28 goals from 15 matches is the second-highest in the club’s Bundesliga history (after 30 in 1994/95).
6. No joy against league leaders
To date, Freiburg have played 22 away matches against the leaders in the Bundesliga without managing a single win, and they’ve even lost the last 13 against the team top of the table.
7. Nemesis Lewandowski
In his 16 Bundesliga encounters with Freiburg, Robert Lewandowski has scored 17 goals – no other player has netted more times against the Black Forest club in Germany’s top flight than the Pole. The Best FIFA Men’s Player has already hit 20 goals in the first 15 games of this season, a record only matched by Gerd Müller during the 1968/69 season.
