FC Bayern are looking to continue their title defence with the trip to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST). The facts and figures for the game show how the past results have been one-sided, how Bayern can extend their run against VfL and why long-range shots could be a decisive factor.
1. Strong record against Wolfsburg
If you go by the statistics, FC Bayern are likely to run out winners on Saturday. The record champions have won ten of the last eleven Bundesliga games against VfL (one draw) and scored 39-6 goals. Of all the teams FC Bayern have played at least ten times in the Bundesliga, they only have a better average points-per-game against Energie Cottbus (2.50) than against Wolfsburg (2.49).
2. Munich goal factory
Bayern's attack cannot be stopped in the Bundesliga. The Munich team have not failed to score in the last 41 Bundesliga games, scoring 122 goals. This is the second longest run of goals in Bundesliga history, only outdone by the record champions themselves between April 2012 and April 2014 (65 games). Most recently, FCB were without a goal in the 0-0 draw against RB Leipzig in February 2020.
3. Will FCB continue their run?
Bayern are currently undefeated for half a dozen Bundesliga games (five wins, one draw) and have only lost one of their last 13 games (eleven wins, one draw): the 2-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt in February. The league leaders have picked up 65 points from 28 games this season, the most since the 2017/18 season (69). However, Wolfsburg are also having a strong campaign with 54 points, five more than they managed all of last season (49).
4. Long shot specialists
The duel between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern is also a clash of the best long-range shooters in the Bundesliga. The Munich team have scored 14 times from a distance, and VfL have eight long-range goals.
5. Wolves strong at home
Wolfsburg are unbeaten in 13 Bundesliga home games (nine wins, four draws). In addition, the Lower Saxons have not conceded a goal in the last five games in their own stadium, a new club record. Overall, Wolfsburg have kept 13 clean sheets this season. VfL suffered their last home defeat in June last year. The opponents at the time were FC Bayern, who won 4-0 on the final day of the 2019/20 season.
