On Saturday it’s the long-standing Bundesliga classic between FC Bayern and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Particularly in the 70s, these two teams often battled it out for the league title, and this weekend’s meeting could also decide the title race. fcbayern.com has gathered some interesting facts ahead of the Matchday 32 clash.
1. Rare chance
The Munich men will definitely wrap up a ninth successive German championship by their own doing if they win. If so, it would be only the second time that FCB have sealed the title at home, after they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 on the final day of the 2018/19 campaign on a magical day.
2. Repeat of last year?
Bayern clinched the title on Matchday 32 last year with an away victory at Bremen, and it’s the same matchday this weekend.
3. Overall record favours FCB
Bayern and Gladbach have crossed swords 105 times before in the top flight. The record stands at 50 wins for FCB, 29 draws and 26 defeats. The goal difference of 200:134 is also clearly in the record champions’ favour.
4. Lewandowski on hunt for record
Robert Lewandowski made his return from injury on the last matchday and was immediately back among the goals. The Best FIFA Men’s Player became the first player to hit 36 goals in a Bundesliga campaign since Bayern legend Gerd Müller in 1972/73 – the man whose record haul of 40 goals in one season in 1971/72 Lewandowski is chasing.
5. Flick’s remarkable record
Hansi Flick has just three matches left as Bayern coach. In his 83 competitive matches to date in the record champions’ dugout, he’s suffered just seven defeats. And there is only club against whom he has lost twice: Mönchengladbach! Flick will clearly be looking to improve his record against the Foals on Saturday.
