FCB Esports knocked out in unfortunate circumstances despite six points

FC Bayern Esports had to experience how close joy and sorrow can come on the last matchday of the KONAMI eFootball.Pro League. The trio of Miguel Mestre, Alex Alguacil and Jose Sanchez scored the winner in the final minute of their match against Monaco to claim the all-important six points against the league leaders. They’d done their part and were within reach of the play-off, but because Arsenal went on to pick up a point against Celtic, the Munich team were eliminated. Any other result for the Gunners would’ve seen FCB through to the knockout stage.

You can watch Bayern‘s impressive performance in the highlights:

“It was an extremely emotional matchday. We were over the moon after our last-minute winner, but then came the nervous wait,” said dejected coach Matthias Luttenberger. Arsenal’s point meant they, Bayern and Schalke all stood on 26 points. A mini table was then created with the three, where FCB came out below Schalke despite a superior head-to-head record. “That was really painful, a really unfortunate configuration,” the Austrian added.

Comeback came too late

It means Bayern’s season ends at the group stage, with seventh place not qualifying for the knockout rounds. “We’re disappointed and of course our performance isn’t satisfactory, but it’s our own fault for not getting enough points,” said Luttenberger looking back on the campaign in which Bayern got going too late. After a mediocre start, FCB were even bottom for a while. “We were strong in training, where we also play against teams from the league, but on matchdays we put in poor performances. Things got better in the end, but unfortunately it was too late,” the coach said in summary of Bayern’s second Esports season.
