It's a European classic - England vs. Germany! On Tuesday evening (18.00 CEST), the DFB team led by captain Manuel Neuer face The Three Lions in the European Championship Round of 16. "We're very motivated and are all looking forward to it," said the FC Bayern goalkeeper on Monday evening at the pre-match press conference.
A game steeped in history
The venue could hardly be more historic - England and Germany have played out many a famous match at Wembley. Neuer himself has excellent memories of the stadium, celebrating a Champions League title win there with FC Bayern in 2013. "Wembley suits us," the 35-year-old said after Wednesday's final group game draw against Hungary (2-2).
"It will perhaps also be a test of our composure. We have to watch out for their quick players in particular," Neuer noted. "We have experienced players and quality footballers in our squad, and that means we can defend against good teams like England."
If it were up to the Germany captain, the classic encounter would only be a step on the way to fulfilling the side's bigger goals. "We're convinced we can beat England," said Neuer. Should the Germans' path at the European Championship go past the English, they'll face a possible quarter-final in Rome. After that, Neuer and co. will want to be returning to Wembley, the venue for the semi-finals and final.
