Ulreich: I didn't need to think about it for long

Sven Ulreich is back at Bayern! After a year with Hamburger SV, the goalkeeper has moved back to Munich. The 32-year-old completed his medical this week and will be there for the start of pre-season training next week. In an interview with fcbayern.com, Ulreich discusses his return to Bayern.

The interview with Sven Ulreich

Servus, Ulle, and welcome back! What does it mean to you to be back at FC Bayern?
Ulreich: “I’m hugely excited! I had a great time previously in Munich and I want to follow on from that. FC Bayern are just a great club.”

How did your return come about?
“I terminated my contract at Hamburg after we missed out on promotion. When the enquiry from Munich came, I didn’t need to think about it for long. I was delighted that FC Bayern were interested in me again.”

Did you keep in touch with anyone from the team during your time at HSV?
“Yes – with Manuel Neuer, Toni Tapalović, a couple of other players and also some of the staff. When you’ve experienced so much together, you’re like a little family and you stay in touch. When my transfer was made official, they also messaged me straight away.”

There’s a new coach in Julian Nagelsmann. What are you expecting from him?
“I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. I’m curious and excited. Julian was very successful at his previous clubs. I hope we can continue that with him.”

What are you looking forward to most at FC Bayern?
“I met a lot of great people in the previous five years – in and around the team. There’s a reason FC Bayern is called a big family. It’s very nice to see the people every day again. Obviously I’m also looking forward to the games with the boys. I followed them on TV while I was away. It’s amazing to be part of it again now!”

What have you missed most about the city of Munich?
“I’m most looking forward to being close to the mountains. The fact you can just go on a quick trip to the Alps – I’ve missed that.”

You’re also very popular among the fans. Hopefully there’ll be fans back in the Allianz Arena for the new season…
“Indeed! We celebrated a lot of successes in my last year at Bayern, but sadly without spectators. That also meant I didn’t get to say goodbye properly. That makes it even nicer to now come back and hopefully play in front of the fans again soon.”
