The first title of the season is on the line as Bayern head to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (20:30 CEST) for the 2021 Supercup. For FCB, it’s about defending the trophy they won last year against BVB and extending their dominance in the competition. You can find out here how many times Bayern have won the Supercup and the other records they hold in our facts and figures.
1. Two most successful teams in Supercup
The Klassiker of German football sees the two record participants in the Supercup face each other yet again. Bayern are competing for the trophy for the 15th time – and 10th year in a row – while Dortmund are making their 12th appearance. As well as being the most successful team in the league (31 championships) and DFB Cup (20), FCB are also the top dogs in the Supercup, having won it eight times compared to BVB’s six, with Werder Bremen third on three titles.
2. Bayern looking for new record run against Dortmund
The Munich club have won their last five competitive matches against BVB, which equals their best run against them from the 1960s. Another triumph in the Supercup would therefore see FCB set a new club record, but they’ll be aware that the last Borussia win also came at Signal Iduna Park in the 2019 Supercup (2-0).
3. No favourites in Supercup Klassiker
This is the ninth time Bayern and Dortmund have faced off in the Supercup. Of the other 14 pairings in this competition, none have been played more than once. And there’s no obvious favourite on Tuesday when looking at the history books, with both teams winning four of their Supercup encounters each.
4. Record players Müller and Lewandowski
Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski have featured in the Supercup 10 times over their career, which is the most of any players. All 10 of Müller’s games have come for Bayern, while it’s seven in Red and three with Dortmund for Lewandowski. Lewy is also the competition’s top scorer with five goals.
5. Next debut for Nagelsmann
Following his competitive debut as Bayern boss last Friday in Mönchengladbach, Julian Nagelsmann is now preparing for his first appearance in the Supercup, which he’d like to crown by winning his first trophy in senior football. His opposite number Marco Rose is also making his debut in the competition. It’s the first time since 2018 that both coaches have been Supercup first-timers, when Niko Kovac and Bayern won 5-0 at Adi Hütter’s Eintracht Frankfurt.
Lewandowski made a good start to the season to extend his record run in the 1-1 draw at Gladbach:
