Gerd Müller, "Der Bomber", died a week ago. On Sunday, the legendary Bayern attacker received his big farewell in the Allianz Arena. In the run-up to the first home game of the Bundesliga season against 1. FC Köln, a large banner went up in the south stand with the inscription: "Commitment and identity - An FC Bayern Legend - Rest In Peace, Gerd Müller!".
Numerous spectators were in the arena, but it all went quiet when shortly before kick-off a video was played in memory of "Der Bomber" and club president Herbert Hainer and honorary president Uli Hoeneß entered the field.
President Herbert Hainer: Gerd Müller leaves a legacy
"Today we all mourn Gerd Müller, one of the greatest FC Bayern footballers and someone who made history in the German national team. Anyone who talks about Gerd Müller and his achievements always has a smile on their face. He has always given us lots of joy - and that's how we want to remember him. He never went into the limelight, even though he was one of the greatest footballers in history. Gerd Müller leaves a legacy, a large and incomparable legacy. Any club in the world would have been lucky to have a player like him in their ranks. Gerd Müller was more valuable than any trophy win," said FCB President Herbert Hainer in honour of the legendary number 9.
Honorary President Uli Hoeneß: "You... created Mia san Mia"
"My dear Gerd, I stand here on behalf of everyone who was lucky enough to have had the honour of playing football with you or training under you later. You set a Bundesliga record of 365 goals that will probably never be beaten. With Franz (Beckenbauer), Sepp (Maier) and Bulle (Franz Roth) you taught Bayern how to win. You always believed in yourself and FC Bayern and never gave up. You and your friends created Mia san Mia, which still distinguishes FC Bayern today and which we all look up to. Unfortunately this illness destroyed you, in the end death was a blessing. I won't forget what your wife Uschi did caring for you for years, that was unbelievable. I never thought that kind of act was possible. We will miss you very much and we will never forget you. Thank you!" said Uli Hoeneß.
Gerd Müller chants from the south stand echoed through the Allianz Arena. He will never be forgotten.
