Davies scores in important Canada victory

Canada and Alphonso Davies have taken a step closer to qualifying for the 2022 World Cup after they beat Panama 4-1 at home in Toronto on Wednesday night. And the Bayern defender put in an impressive display.

Alphonso Davies led from the front for Canada with a strong performance.

Canada fell behind inside five minutes, but a corner from Davies just before the half-hour mark saw them equalise through an own goal. The Bayern No19 then did things all by himself in the 66th minute when the 21-year-old pinched the ball ahead of a defender down the right, dribbled into the box, cut inside and put his country 2-1 ahead with his left-foot finish inside the near post. The Canucks then made things comfortable when Tajon Buchanan added a third five minutes later. Davies was then the creator again for Jonathan David to get the fourth in the 78th minute.

Canada up to third

The victory sees Canada leapfrog Panama in the table for World Cup qualification. Davies & Co. have 10 points from six games to sit third in the Octagonal – the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying - which would see them qualify automatically for Qatar. Their buffer to Panama and the inter-confederation play-off in fourth is two points.
