With a maximum haul of 12 points from four games, Bayern already have their place in the round of 16 in the bag – but the hunger of Julian Nagelsmann’s men is far from being satisfied. On Matchday 5 of the Champions League, the Bavarians still have clear aims, can extend records and set new ones. Read on to find out what they are:
1. Aiming to wrap up top spot
Bayern will secure first place in Group E if they get a point in Kyiv, or if Barcelona fail to beat Benfica in the other fixture. It would be the 18th time that FCB have been group winners in the Champions League – only Barca have achieved this more often (21 times).
2. Another four-goal haul would make history
Bayern have scored four or more goals in each of their last three outings in the Champions League, with the 5-0 thrashing of Dynamo Kyiv in late September followed by 4-0 and 5-2 successes against Benfica. The German record champions have only been on a run like this once before in the competition – and that was nearly 50 years ago in autumn 1972. Should they find the net at least four times again in Ukraine, FCB would become the first team since the European Cup was founded in 1955 to score more than three goals in four consecutive matches.
3. Best attack versus worst
Dynamo, along with Malmo, are the only side yet to score during the current Champions League season. In stark contrast, Bayern have equalled the competition record set by Paris Saint-Germain in the 2017/18 campaign of 17 goals after four games. Incidentally, the Parisians also set the record for most goals in a Champions League group stage that season with 25, one more than Bayern’s tally of 24 in the 2019/20 treble season.
4. Lewandowski taking more shots than Kyiv
Kyiv have managed just nine attempts on their opponents’ goal in four group matches this term. That’s three fewer than Robert Lewandowski alone has registered (12).
5. Lewandowski can equal personal record
Staying with Lewandowski, the Pole has scored in each of his last eight Champions League appearances and can now equal his personal record from 2020, when he netted in nine consecutive matches. Ruud van Nistelrooy (9 between September 2002 and April 2003) and Cristiano Ronaldo (11 between June 2017 and April 2018) are the only other players who have scored in nine or more games in a row.
6. Bayern far better in head-to-head
Kyiv have lost five of their seven Champions League encounters with FCB. They’ve only lost more times to Barcelona in the competition (six). The Ukrainians claimed their only win against Bayern in the last meeting in Kyiv, beating Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side 2-0 in March 2000. Nagelsmann and his men now have the chance to finally put that right on Tuesday.
7. Bayern’s record run on the road
They’ll fancy their chances of doing that given their current away form in Europe. The German champions are unbeaten in 20 Champions League away matches since a 3-0 loss at PSG in September 2017 (W16 D4), extending the record in the competition with the recent 4-0 victory in Lisbon.
