FC Bayern travel to FC Augsburg on Friday in the opening fixture of Bundesliga Matchday 12. After extending their lead at the top of the table to four points before the international break, the Munich men are targeting the next win against FCA. Read on to find out about the stats that favour an away victory and what milestone Thomas Müller is set to celebrate.
1. Clear-cut record against Augsburg
Augsburg are one of Bayern’s favourite opponents. In the 20 previous Bundesliga clashes between the Bavarian rivals, FCB have won 16 (D2 L2). Of the teams who Bayern have faced at least 10 times in the top flight, they only have a higher win percentage against Energie Cottbus (83%) than against FCA (80%). The away record of eight wins, one draw and one defeat is also clearly in Bayern’s favour, with the average of 2.5 points per game higher than against any other side who FCB have played away five or more times in the Bundesliga.
2. Phenomenal firepower
Bayern have already reeled off 40 goals during the current Bundesliga campaign, the most that any team have ever scored after the first 11 matchdays. Their goal difference of +29 (40:11) equals the record after 11 matchdays set by the Reds themselves in 2015/16 (33:4).
3. Müller set for milestone
Thomas Müller is one game away from his 600th competitive appearance for Bayern. He’d become only the third player to reach this number for Bayern at professional level after Sepp Maier and Oliver Kahn, and the first outfield player. Müller is once again the leading provider in the Bundesliga this season with eight assists – only Kevin de Bruyne for Wolfsburg in the 2014/15 season has registered more assists after 11 matchdays since detailed data collection began in 2004.
4. Lewy likes scoring in Augsburg
Against no other team has Robert Lewandowski scored more goals away from home in the Bundesliga than against Augsburg (10, same as Mainz 05 and Schalke 04). The only player in Bundesliga history who has scored more goals against a single team away from home was Gerd Müller, who fired in 11 at Schalke. With 13 goals after 11 matchdays, Lewandowski has the same tally as he did at this stage in his record-breaking season last year. Only in the 2019/20 campaign did he have more goals by this point (16).
5. Nagelsmann’s favourite opponents
Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann has won more Bundesliga matches against Augsburg (nine) than against any other side. In 11 encounters against the Fuggerstädter with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, he’s never lost (W9 D2).
