Leroy Sane has been in top form of late, delivering excellent goals and now getting another title to go with it as the 25-year-old was voted by fans as the winner of the FC Bayern Goal of the Month for October, having already picked up the September edition.
Sublime and crucial
However, Sane’s acclaimed goal wasn’t just good to look at, it was crucial. The Champions League match away at Benfica was finely balanced going into the final stage, with the score still goalless. It took a set piece, and few can take them as well as Bayern’s No10.
The free-kick specialist carefully placed the ball 20 yards out in the 70th minute, stepped up and fired it unstoppably past Benfica’s goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos into the top corner. It was the breakthrough Bayern needed as they went on to record a comfortable win. Sane followed up his crucial opener with the assist for Robert Lewandowski to make it 3-0 and then another goal himself for 4-0.
Coman and Lewandowski on the podium
Just like last month with his strike against Bochum, a Sane free-kick was picked out by fans as the club’s best goal of the month. He won 37% of the vote in October. Second place was Kingsley Coman’s blast against Union Berlin (24%), Lewandowski was third for his hit against Hoffenheim (21%).
