Lewandowski wins 2021 Golden Player award

Robert Lewandowski has been awarded the 2021 Golden Player award by Italian magazine Tuttosport as the best player over the age of 21 in the last year. The Bayern striker also received the accolade last year as well. He beat Italy’s European champion Jorginho and also Lionel Messi to the distinction.

Jury of legends in agreement

The 33-year-old was chosen by a jury of former stars including Lothar Matthäus, Andriy Shevchenko, Hristo Stoichkov, Luca Toni, Samuel Eto’o and Rui Costa. Having played a major part in Bayern winning six titles the previous year, this time Lewandowski’s case was made by his record-breaking 41 Bundesliga goals, surpassing the total set by the legendary Gerd Müller 49 years previously.

Golden Boy Career Award for Rummenigge

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was also given a special prize by Tuttosport for his great career in football. The 66-year-old stepped down as Bayern CEO after 19 years in the summer, having previously been one of the best players of his generation before becoming one of the most important figures in world football. His unique career will serve as an example to other great players for what they can achieve once they hang up their boots.

The Golden Player award might not be the only golden trophy Lewandowski receives this year:
