Neuer equals Kahn’s win record

In yet another remarkable achievement, Manuel Neuer brought up his 310th Bundesliga win on Saturday evening, thanks to FC Bayern's 3-2 home success against RB Leipzig. In doing so, the Bayern captain equalled the previous record held by current CEO Oliver Kahn. “It’s a very special number. But what matters is that we win as a team and stay top of the pile,” Neuer insisted afterwards.

In the victory against Leipzig, Neuer once again underlined his crucial role in the serial champions’ team, as the Bayern keeper set a personal best this season with five shots saved. Our number one’s tremendous display included two moments of magic: with the score 1-0 to FCB, he saved twice in quick succession from Dani Olmo, first beating away a shot despite being off balance, then reacting superbly to prevent an equaliser. Shortly before the end, Neuer salvaged his side’s 3-2 victory with a save to deny sub Emil Forsberg.

Kahn had a smile on his face as he praised the current keeper. "I recently said I’d be fine if he left me with something. But it reflects his quality performances over so many years." Neuer was happy to repay the compliment: "Oliver Kahn was very ambitious as a player, and still is as the man in charge now. He’s happy about every victory we win together and doesn’t begrudge any player his achievements, even if you might break his records," the 2014 World Cup winner said.

310 wins in 458 Bundesliga games

Of his 310 triumphs in the German top flight, Neuer has won 233 with Bayern and 77 with Schalke. The keeper needed just 458 games to equal the record - Kahn achieved the figure of 310 victories in 557 appearances. Neuer's record is genuinely impressive, as underlined by a comparison with opponents Leipzig, who so far have a total of 100 Bundesliga wins in their entire club history (in 191 games). Next weekend, Neuer will take aim at the outright record as Bayern target an away win at Bochum.
