A goal from Marcel Sabitzer wasn’t enough for Austria on Thursday evening to keep their dreams alive of a place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The 2-1 defeat to Wales in the play-off semi-final meant Marco Foda’s team were out of the running for Qatar. Gareth Bale’s brace put the Welsh ahead in Cardiff before Sabitzer got one back on 64 minutes after the Bayern midfielder’s shot from the edge of the box was deflected off Ben Davies. However, the Austrians’ comeback failed to materialise. Their next game is a friendly against Scotland in Vienna on 29 March.
Lewandowski rested, win for Wanner
Robert Lewandowski was rested for Poland’s 1-1 friendly draw against Scotland in Glasgow on Thursday. The Best FIFA Men’s Player and his country will compete for their place in Qatar on Tuesday when they face Sweden in the play-off final. Paul Wanner had also been in Scotland on Wednesday as he played in the first of three Euro qualifiers for Germany’s U17s, beating his Georgian counterparts 3-0 in Falkirk thanks to goals from Tom Bischof, Nelson Weiper and Maurice Krattenmacher. Wanner played the full 90 minutes.
