Bayern set three away scoring records despite defeat in Mainz

It wasn’t the result that Julian Nagelsmann and his team had wanted as FC Bayern followed up winning the Bundesliga for the 10th year in a row with a 3-1 defeat away at Mainz, the club’s fifth loss of the season.

Even though Nagelsmann’s side came home with no points, they did once again show they are always good for a goal. Robert Lewandowski made it 2-1 in the 33rd minute after spinning onto an Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting pass to net his 18th away goal of the season. No player has ever before scored so many times on the road in a Bundesliga campaign.

More away goals than any other team

Robert Lewandowski made it 2-1 in the 33rd minute at Mainz.

The 33-year-old’s strike also took the team into the record books with their 47th away goal of the 2021/22 campaign. A total only previously achieved in the Bundesliga by the FCB class of 2019/20. Key to that is Bayern’s consistency on their travels. They have scored at least once in each of their last 50 away league games, further extending their own Bundesliga record.
