Bayern send Sammy Kuffour shirt for son Munich

Sammy Kuffour remains one of the biggest fan favourites at FC Bayern. He was part of the Champions League-winning team in 2001 and headed in the winning goal in the Club World Cup final against Boca Juniors in Tokyo. Equally legendary is his chant of "We want red and white shirts" during the title celebrations on the Munich Town Hall balcony. This summer the long-serving Bayern player became a father, and gave his son the special name of Munich.

For his birthday on 3 September, board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić packed a special parcel for his former teammate to send greetings from FC Bayern to Ghana. "Dear Sammy, many happy returns on your birthday, and congratulations on the birth of your child," said Salihamidžić. "We're all overjoyed that you've named your son Munich - a Munich child in Ghana. That shows your deep your connection is to this city and our club. You'll always be part of the FC Bayern family."

The special birthday package contains two new home kits. The shirt is, as ever, in Kuffour's preferred colours of red and white. "Our fans will always be grateful to you," added Salihamidžić. One of the shirts bears the number 4 because Kuffour once wore the squad number that now belongs to summer signing Matthijs de Ligt. The mini version is printed with the name 'Munich' and the number 22, referencing the year of his birth. "Your son will certainly grow into it," said Salihamidžić with a grin. "Keep your fingers crossed for us in Ghana! Servus from Säbener Straße!"

The FC Bayern Munich AG supervisory board unanimously decided on Monday to extend the contract of board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić until 30 June 2026:
