Choupo-Moting: We’re about togetherness as a team

Several FC Bayern players will be involved with their national teams at the 2022 World Cup. In club magazine ‘51’, our boys reveal who we should look out for from their sides, how they rate their chances and who their favourites are. Part 2 is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for Cameroon.

Interview with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

How do you rate your chances?
Choupo-Moting: “Our first goal has to be to get through the group. I think ours with Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland is one of the hardest at the tournament.”

What’s special about your team?
“We’re about good team and fighting spirit. We saw that in the recent World Cup play-offs against Algeria – one of Africa’s best teams. We lost the first leg 1-0 at home, hardly anyone was backing us. Then we took it to extra-time in the second leg, conceded an equaliser for 1-1 in the 118th minute, but then we made it 2-1 in the fourth minute of added time to go to the World Cup. I’ll never forget that moment in my life.”

Which player from your team should fans particularly watch out for?
“We don’t have any big stars in the team who stand out like Roger Milla or Samuel Eto’o before. We’re about togetherness as a team and desire.”

Who are the favourite for you and why?
“Brazil. I know a few of the guys personally, have played together with Neymar, for example. The Brazilians also have team harmony to go with their individual class. It’ll be the last World Cup for some players, so they’ll go into the tournament hungry."

A total of 17 FCB players from eight countries have been selected for the World Cup in Qatar:
