There was no sign of any ring rust on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as FC Bayern drew 1-1 with Leipzig in their first competitive game for two months. The Cameroon international opened the scoring at the Red Bull Arena to take his tally to 11 goals in his last 10 competitive matches, including 10 in nine prior to the World Cup break.
New personal record
It represents career-best form for Choupo-Moting, who stuck away his 12th competitive goal of the campaign with his 37th-minute effort in Leipzig. Never before has the 33-year-old produced so many single-season goals, with away days proving particularly fruitful. 'Choups' has scored five times across his previous four Bundesliga outings on the road.
Of course, a striker is only as good as his supply line, and Choupo-Moting is by no means the only Bayern player on a proverbial roll. Serge Gnabry's wonderfully weighted cross for the crafty veteran swells his own hand to five goals across his last three Bundesliga games (four of his own, plus one assist).
The red-hot form of Messrs Choupo-Moting and Gnabry has helped Bayern hit the 50-goal mark just 16 Bundesliga matches into the season. They're the only team to have reached the milestone sooner - after 15 matches, back in 1976/77. A nine-match scoring run totalling some 31 goals has more than played its part for the class of 2022/23. Long may it continue!
