Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting will now officially be at Bayern again next season after the striker signed a one-year contract extension.
“I’m happy things are going so well this season and I’m getting so many minutes,” the 34-year-old said after putting pen to paper on his new deal, modestly hinting at what Bayern fans have probably noticed over the past few weeks – that we’re perhaps seeing the best Choupo-Moting ever.
Better than ever
Bayern’s No.13 has 15 goals in all competitions this season, which is the best return of his professional career – and with just over half of the campaign done. Only Jamal Musiala can match him in the internal scoring chart. All 15 of the Cameroon international’s goals have actually come since the start of October 2022. No other Bundesliga player has scored as often in that timeframe, which included a real purple patch of seven competitive games in a row where he struck.
The striker also recently underlined his status in Germany’s top flight with another impressive stat. His goal against Union on Sunday means he has now scored against all 18 current Bundesliga clubs – a feat no other player plying their trade in the league right now can claim. And Choupo-Moting could also soon break his own personal best for a Bundesliga campaign, being just a goal short of the 10 he netted for Mainz in 2011/12 and 2013/14.
Clinical Choupo
And given the Hamburg native’s proficiency in front of goal, that would only appear a matter of time. He’s needed just 27 shots for his nine goals this campaign, working out at one every three attempts. That’s the best rate of any player this season alongside Mainz’s Jae-sung Lee, of players to have had at least 20 shots on goal.
“We’ve very pleased that Choupo will be staying with us for another year,” said Hasan Salihamidzic at the conclusion of the contract negotiations. The board member for sport has closely watched his striker’s development since his October 2020 move to Munich. Originally signed as back-up to Robert Lewandowski, Choupo-Moting has now successfully filled the gap left by the Pole’s departure, according to Salihamidzic.
And Choupo-Moting still has plenty of goals he wants to achieve leading the line for Bayern – and Bayern have big goals with him in the side over the next year and a bit.
