Visit to German Ambassador in Singapore

Singapore is one of the highly developed countries in Asia and has been considered the gateway to Southeast Asia for many years, also because of its geographical location. This is one of the reasons why Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economics Minister Robert Habeck visited the city-state, which is comparable in area to Hamburg, at the Asia-Pacific Conference in Singapore in November 2022. German Ambassador Dr Norbert Riedel pointed out Singapore's economic power, its leading role within ASEAN and the strong presence of German companies in Singapore during a visit by FC Bayern on Monday.

Riedel had invited FC Bayern executive vice chairman Dr Michael Diederich, board member for marketing Andreas Jung, first vice president Professor Dr Dieter Mayer and Bayern legend Giovane Élber.

The FC Bayern team will play their third and final match of the Audi Summer Tour 2023 in Singapore against Liverpool this Wednesday, with the National Stadium set to be sold out. There is a lot of interest in football for games involving top teams from the major European leagues. The Singapore Football Association has set itself ambitious goals. Even if the results of the national team are still lacking, the first steps on a new path have been taken. Sport is important in Singapore, Ambassador Riedel said during the one-hour exchange, which also dealt with Singapore's digital development and the political structure of the small country.

5.6 million people live in Singapore, 3.5 million of whom hold Singaporean passports. The majority of Singapore's citizens are of Chinese (75%), Malay (13%) or Indian (9%) descent. "Trips like our summer tour to Japan and Singapore are also about better understanding the societies and cultures we visit," said Michael Diederich. "The visit with Ambassador Norbert Riedel was valuable and gave us interesting insights and assessments. I would like to thank him for that on behalf of FC Bayern."
