Bayern were beaten 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the opening fixture of the 2023/24 season as Die Roten Bullen claimed the Supercup thanks to clinical finishing. “We created chances in the first half and then conceded simple goals at the other end. The discrepancy between the form, the mood and what we see out on the pitch is big,” said head coach Thomas Tuchel in his analysis of the game. We have to “continue working” and “put this game behind us,” added Sven Ulreich. “From tomorrow it’s full focus on Bremen. We want to win the first three points of the season there.” fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the Supercup.
Reaction to the 2023 Supercup against RB Leipzig
Thomas Tuchel: “We’re disappointed. We created chances in the first half and then conceded simple goals at the other end. The discrepancy between the form, the mood and what we see out on the pitch is big. The willingness, enjoyment of play, form and condition we played with in the friendly matches has nothing to do with how we played today.”
Sven Ulreich: “We all imaged the game going differently. We didn’t get into the game, were lacking the desire and physicality from the start. Leipzig did Leipzig things. They weren’t in the game a lot but countered and were dangerous with every attack. We can’t let that happen. We had chances and should’ve got one back straight after the break. Then we conceded a dumb penalty and it’s obviously then tough. We have to keep working now, put this game behind us. You get games like this. We have to look ahead. From tomorrow it’s full focus on Bremen. We want to win the first three points of the season there.”
Matthijs de Ligt: “We weren’t at the races from the start, allowed them a lot of chances and didn’t take ours. We performed well in the friendlies against Monaco and Liverpool. Today we weren’t good, and then it’s tough against an opponent like Leipzig. We have to stick together, work hard every day, and improve the things we didn’t do well.”
Reaction from the Leipzig camp
Max Eberl (managing director): “We didn’t quite know before the game where we stood. The boys worked hard for it and deserve the title. We did well and deservedly won.”
Marco Rose (head coach): “We won 3-0, scored nice goals and even had more chances. We worked hard and with passion in defence, but also still allowed them some chances. The game provides us with material for things to do better, but it should also give us a boost and confidence. Coming through in Munich is impressive, but we need to put it into perspective. We need it again next week in Leverkusen.”
Dani Olmo: “It was a great game. We ran a lot and gave everything. It was the perfect game. We knew Bayern would have a lot of possession. There’s no better way to start the season. We wanted to win the title.”
