The look on Kingsley Coman's face told you that he didn't exactly intend for his artistic strike to end up in the back of the net as it did. Somewhat surprised but with a broad smile, the Frenchman acknowledged his opening goal against Freiburg. Coman's cross from the right looped over visiting goalkeeper Noah Atubolu onto the far post and into the net. The 27-year-old's first goal of the season was quite a sight – but that's just how Coman does it sometimes!
Coman: It was a cross
"It was a cross, I didn't mean to shoot at all," the winger admitted with a grin after the match. Sometimes you need a bit of luck, he added – and that stayed with him for the rest of the game, thankfully for Bayern. When he made it 3-0 in the 85th minute, the flight of the ball again turned out differently than planned. "The second goal was deflected too," said Coman. That by no means dampened his delight about the manner of the win, though. "I'm very happy about the goals and the game."
Tuchel's premonition
Whether intended or not, Coman opened his account again in his ninth season in the Bayern shirt. The fact that it took a bit longer for the first one to come this season wasn't worrying his coach. Coman has the "right attitude and approach" and it was "only a matter of time" before he got back to his numbers from previous years in terms of goal involvements, Thomas Tuchel said in Friday's pre-match press conference. The 50-year-old was very much proven right on Sunday.
"Kingsley played very well on the right side. I think he just needed a goal like that," praised Tuchel at full time. "He worked very hard, was involved in a number of dangerous situations and it was a top performance today." The stats back that up, and not just because of Coman's brace. The France international fired off six attempts on goal – the most of any player on the pitch and three times as many as opponents Freiburg. The winger also clocked the fastest speed at 34.9 km/h.
Good omen Coman
Fans of the German record champions will therefore be hoping that the floodgates have opened for the attacker this season. After all, a Coman in form is worth his weight in gold to Bayern, who have never lost a Bundesliga match in which he's scored. The record stands at 34 wins and one draw.
