Although Saturday evening's meeting between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern isn't a straight battle for top spot in the Bundesliga, it will most likely electrify the masses once again. The Bundesliga Klassiker has produced countless special moments in the past – one of those, around 14 years ago, will be particularly fondly remembered by Thomas Müller.
Müller's first goals in the Bundesliga
Along with Dortmund's Mats Hummels, the 34-year-old is the only player from the current squads who was involved in this special encounter on 12 September 2009. One day before his 20th birthday, the born-and-bred Bavarian enjoyed a memorable afternoon at Signal Iduna Park. After coming on at half-time with the score at 2-1 to Bayern, Müller netted twice to help his team to a 5-1 victory in the end! They were his first two goals in the German top flight – and he also became only the third player to this day, after Giovane Élber and Dieter Hoeneß, to score a brace as a substitute in this fixture.
Years of experience against BVB
Since then, the veteran has gone on to rack up 145 goals in 450 Bundesliga games. Müller knows the much-cited Klassiker against Dortmund well enough. On Saturday, he could make his 26th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern against BVB, making him clearly the player with the most experience on the Munich side in this clash. Only Oliver Kahn (27) made more appearances for FCB against Dortmund in this competition. As in his debut 14 years ago, Müller also scored a brace in the last meeting between the rivals in April (4-2) – and it doesn't have to be his last by any means.
