FC Bayern came from behind to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 at home in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon. Understandably, the head coach and players appeared satisfied. “We stayed calm and showed a good reaction to the early goal we conceded,” said head coach Thomas Tuchel. Now, Bayern are focussing on the upcoming match against the league leaders Bayer Leverkusen next weekend. “If you look into the eyes of our fans, they just hammered home that we can beat Leverkusen next week. We need to internalise that,” commented Thomas Müller, who recorded a landmark 500th victory for the club at senior level. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction for you.
Reaction to the match against Gladbach
Christoph Freund: “We started well and had two or three great chances to score in the first 20-25 minutes but failed to capitalise. Then we gave a goal away too easily. But the reaction was very good. It was important to score the equaliser before half-time. Based on the second half, we deserved to win.”
Thomas Tuchel: “We stayed calm and showed a good reaction to the goal we conceded. We had great opportunities to score an early lead but then we had two or three minutes during which Gladbach got into our penalty area for the first time. At that moment, we made the mistake going forward and conceded the goal against the run of play. Afterwards, it was tough for us because Gladbach proved they can defend tenaciously for a sustained period of time. But Harry [Kane] scored that odd tap-in and afterwards we had chances to counter-attack and extend the lead. We did our job. It was a decent performance against a tough opponent.”
Thomas Müller: “I don't really like all of these landmarks just because it's a round number. But I am obviously grateful. It's not the wins but the feeling of winning that is beautiful. That's what we want to experience. If you look into the eyes of our fans, they just hammered home that we can beat Leverkusen next week. We need to internalise that we're on track to win the away game in Leverkusen. I want to chase that feeling. I couldn't care less if it happens to be a milestone or not.”
Reaction from the Gladbach camp
Julian Weigl (midfielder): “We offered Bayern too many opportunities. They already had one or two good chances to score before we did. We were lucky in those situations. We have to look at the goals we conceded. We made life too easy for them. We're leaving with the feeling we could’ve achieved more today. Therefore, we are disappointed.”
Nico Elvedi (defender): “It's very annoying. If you take a 1-0 lead, you try to hold on to that for as long as possible and maybe score another. But we also know that Bayern are always very strong at home, and you cannot prevent them from creating chances. Unfortunately, we conceded three goals today. We have to accept that.”
