Thomas Tuchel: The defeat was not deserved

Five goals, two drawn-out stoppages and a sending off - after an eventful game, FC Bayern ultimately come away as losers in a 3-2 defeat to Bochum. "We could have certainly turned the game around, but in the end mentality won out over quality today," summarised CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. Coach Thomas Tuchel felt the defeat was "undeserved. A lot went against us." Leon Goretzka said after the final whistle: "It's difficult to find an explanation. Everything is just going against us at the moment." All the reactio to the game is here at fcbayern.com .

Reaction from FC Bayern

Jan-Christian Dreesen (CEO): "We started well in the first 20 minutes. After 1-0, we had the opportunity to double our lead with a great chance coming for Harry Kane. The stoppage in play then threw us completely off our stride - and we lost all our momentum. But we really fought hard with ten men and could certainly have made it 3-3 with some great chances. We could have certainly turned the game around, but in the end mentality won out over quality today and so I feel Bochum deserved to win."

Thomas Tuchel: "I don't think the defeat was a fair result today. A lot went against us. We had five or six clear-cut chances and dominated the game. We went behind out of nowhere, but never gave up until the final whistle. We were outnumbered for a long time. I feel the defeat was different to the last two, it was undeserved. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong today. We perhaps lost a bit of momentum after the break and Bochum used that to fire themselves up. Overall, we performed differently today than in Leverkusen and Rome. We never lost hope."

Manuel Neuer: "We were in control and initially put them under a lot of pressure with great chances. Our rhythm was broken up by the stoppages, but that can't be an excuse. You can always get a penalty given against you, there are always tight situations in the box. We did well for long periods of the game and have to praise ourselves for that. But we can't allow ourselves to fall apart like we did and concede three goals in Bochum. That is not FC Bayern."

Leon Goretzka: "It feels like a horror movie that won't end. Everything is just going against us at the moment. It feels incredibly strange. We can pick ourselves back up and say that we started the game well. And we did. But you do also end up feeling a bit stupid now if you limit yourself to winning in the first half an hour. We gave it everything at the end. You can't blame us for that with a man down. We tried everything and got one back but it's difficult to find explanations for the result. In the end, we made too many individual errors. There have simply been too many of them in recent weeks."

Reaction from today’s opponents VfL Bochum

Thomas Letsch (Coach, VfL Bochum): "We now have 25 points. Yesterday's results went well for one or two of our rivals. So it's good that we picked up three points today. And to beat a team of excellent quality like Bayern, we couldn't afford to do anything wrong. It could well have been that we conceded a third goal at the end and then we'd be back to saying that we'd dropped points again. Leroy Sané and Mathys Tel gave Bayern another real boost."

Kevin Stöger (VfL Bochum): "It's a huge relief. We knew that we could get a point here at home. But now we've got three and the whole of Bochum is certainly very proud of this performance. Bayern had the chance to make it 2-0 straight after their first goal and we were a bit lucky. However after the stoppage, we showed how we can play our football here. I had already said before the game that no opponent likes to come here."

Keven Schlotterbeck (VfL Bochum): "It was an interesting match: a proper Ruhr match in proper Ruhr weather. It was unbelievable fun. We were brave and won our man-to-man defensive duels at the back. It was a great performance from us."
