Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been honoured with a Special Career Award at the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony for his outstanding achievements in international football. The FC Bayern supervisory board member and 1980 European champion received the award at a glittering ceremony in Sardinia. Bayern striker Harry Kane was also honoured on the Italian island. Rummenigge accepted the trophy as Europe's top goalscorer on his behalf.
"Football has given me a lot in my life and it makes me proud to receive this honour, which means a lot to me," said Rummenigge. "Exactly 40 years ago, I signed my contract with Inter Milan and then came here on holiday with my family, so this is a very emotional moment for me."
A big thank you to FC Bayern and Inter Milan
The 68-year-old thanked Inter Milan and FC Bayern. "I played for Bayern for ten years and spent 30 years in management there. I was able to win everything there is to win in club football, for which I am very grateful." His second love is his old home, Inter. ‘It was a huge pleasure to play there and I would like to congratulate Inter on their 20th Scudetto. At last, they will get the second star on their jersey."
Rummenigge ended his acceptance speech with a quote from Franz Beckenbauer: "May he rest in peace. Franz once said: ‘I used to have to fight hard for honours and trophies. After a certain age, you no longer have to do anything to get them.’"
The Globe Soccer Awards - Europe Edition were held in Italy for the first time, with former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski among the guests. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is the first German winner since 2020, when Hansi Flick was honoured as coach of the year and Bayern Munich as club of the year.
Harry Kane was also awarded the Golden Boot as Europe's top goalscorer during the week:
