Alphonso Davies’ Canada missed out on a place in the final of the 2024 Copa América following a 2-0 defeat to Argentina on Tuesday night. The Bayern defender captained his country but had to go off after 71 minutes following a challenge with Gonzalo Montiel.
Argentina went ahead in the semi-final through Julián Álvarez on 22 minutes. Lionel Messi then wrapped things up early in the second half in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Jesse Marsch’s Canada will now contest the third-place play-off against the loser of Wednesday’s other semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay on Saturday night in Charlotte, North Carolina.
