Final heartache for Harry Kane and England: the Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the European Championship final in Berlin on Sunday evening. Kane led out the English team as captain as usual and was taken off in the 61st minute.
"It was a tough game," reflected Kane at full time. "It's hard to put into words. We tried to get back into the game. We had the momentum but couldn't keep it up. It's very painful."
In a close-fought contest, there was little goalmouth action in the first half. FCB forward Kane had a go from the edge of the area in the 45th minute, but it was blocked by Rodri. The best chance fell to Phil Foden, who was denied by Unai Simon in the Spanish goal a minute later.
The second half was just 70 seconds old when Spain took the lead, Lamine Yamal setting up Nico Williams to make it 1-0. The game opened up after that with both sides finding more opportunities, and substitute Cole Palmer equalised for England from around 20 metres in the 73rd minute. However, four minutes from time, Mikel Oyarzabal netted the winning goal for La Roja.
