Thanks to a very confident performance, FC Bayern booked their place in the second round of the DFB Cup on Friday evening with a 4-0 win away at Ulm. "It was important that we won our duels and fought hard to win the second balls," said a satisfied head coach Vincent Kompany. Thomas Müller, having scored a brace, added: "We were serious, but not perfect. I thought it was a good performance, even if there's still room for improvement in possession."
Reaction to the game in Ulm
Vincent Kompany: "I'm satisfied. We got off to a good start and took an early 2-0 lead. I'm also very pleased that we kept a clean sheet. Games like this aren't always easy. It was important that we won our duels fought hard to win the second balls. It wasn't always perfect, but we played with discipline. 4-0 is good, now we move on. It's important that we show the right energy. That's the foundation. It has to be there."
Thomas Müller: "We were serious, but not perfect. We wanted to implement a lot of what we've worked on in recent weeks. It's fun, I feel good, physically I'm in good shape. I did my job, affected the game positively, so that makes me happy. If you look at how we work out of possession and how win our duels, you can see a difference to what didn't work so well for us last year. I thought it was a good performance, even if there's still room for improvement in possession.“
Joshua Kimmich: "The early goals brought calm. All in all, it was a deserved, commanding win. Not everything was quite perfect yet, but we won and are through to the next round - that's all that matters. I always try to get stuck in. If we win 4-0 in the end, then it's all good."
Serge Gnabry: "We started well, had a lot of possession and created dangerous chances. We flew out the gates at the start because we want to go further in the cup this year. There was a fire about us and we tried to play good football. There was a lot of good energy in our performance. It's really fun at the moment. In the end, we deserved to win, all things considered."
Reaction from the Ulm camp
Thomas Wörle (head coach): "We gave a decent account of ourselves. We knew we'd be outclassed, but we did well and didn't allow them too much. With a bit of luck, we would've taken the lead, and then it might have been a different and more exciting game. But I'm positive about the way we performed and the way we fought back."
Johannes Reichert (captain): "All in all, we put in a good performance. It's a shame that it wasn't enough. We were challenged by those at the very highest level, so everyone can take something away from it. That will help us a lot."
Dennis Chessa (midfielder): "It was a special match for all of us and even more so for me, of course, with my Bayern past. We aimed high and wanted to make it hard for Bayern, but you have to be honest and say that Bayern are a world-class team. We did well, and with a bit more luck we might even have been able to upset them a little. The result is probably a little too one-sided in the end."
