What was your best goal? Why do you actually wear No.25? And which teammates did you get on best with? To mark Thomas Müller becoming Bayern’s record appearance maker with his 710th game on Sunday, fans got to ask the club legend questions about his unique career. Our attacking all-rounder took a look back on some of his remarkable stats, special games and provided a few other interesting stories.
For example, Müller recalls some of his nicer goals in Bayern colours. “I once scored a super goal in the Champions League against Roma, with the outside of my boot into the far corner,” the 34-year-old said. His finish in the opening Bundesliga game of 2010 against Wolfsburg was also an “amazing goal”, volleying into the far corner after a one-two with Toni Kroos. But our No.25 also mentions a few shots from range and an overhead kick in his long list.
Speaking of numbers, how did Müller actually end up with his? In typical Müller manner, he recounts the tale of how he got given the shirt by the kitman “probably assuming I wouldn’t be there long. But he was wrong”. Teammates have come and gone over Müller’s 16 years in the Bayern first-team fold. There have been some world-class ones in that time, but who did Müller have the best bond with? “In my early years I got on really well with Arjen Robben both on and off the pitch. We were a good duo down the right,” the Pähl native explained. He also had and still has a special connection with Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Manuel Neuer, although he’s been “married to the goalkeeper for 15 years now”. That Müller sense of humour has never faded in all his time at Bayern.
