Manuel Neuer ahead of Paris: We have to be wide awake

Golden Oak, Florida – the sun is beaming, the temperatures are climbing early on. But not only the weather heats up the atmosphere. FC Bayern can’t wait for Saturday’s FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final match. They take on UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain at 18:00 CEST (12:00 local time).

“One of the best teams in Europe”

“Paris are undoubtedly one of the best teams in Europe,” said FC Bayern president Herbert Hainer: “But we’re FC Bayern. We don’t need to hide from anyone.”

The German record champions are full of confidence – not only because of the convincing 4-2 round of 16 victory over Flamengo, the perhaps strongest team from South America. Their record against Paris favours FCB: Munich have won all of their matches against PSG since April 2021, keeping a clean sheet. They most recently won 1-0 in November 2024, when Minjae Kim’s goal made the difference.

“They aren’t looking forward to playing against us”

“I don’t think they’re looking forward to playing against us,” said captain Manuel Neuer. But the shot-stopper knows it’s going to be a different match on Saturday – against a PSG side that won the Champions League in top form. “They’re very secure on the ball, they’re technically strong and very physical. They don’t take breaks, they incessantly hit the gas.”

The venue isn’t Munich’s Allianz Arena or Paris’ Parc des Princes – but Atlanta, neutral ground. “I think nobody has a clear advantage,” said Neuer: “It’ll come down to details – and avoiding mistakes. Both teams have players who can strike immediately.”

One thing is certain: when FC Bayern take on Paris, a spectacle is to be expected. Both have the right form and confidence when they battle it out for a berth in the semi-finals.
