Bayern set for first meeting with Union Saint-Gilloise

Bayern will face their 72nd different opponent in the Champions League as Union Saint-Gilloise come to the Allianz Arena for the first time on Wednesday night. Only Real Madrid have played against more teams (73). Bayern have won 10 of their last 11 fixtures against new opponents in Europe, with the exception the 1-0 loss at Aston Villa last season. Here’s all the key stats and facts ahead of this first meeting with Belgium’s champions.

One win away from milestone

Victory over the club from Brussels would take Bayern to a milestone figure of 250 wins in the European Cup/Champions League, including qualifiers. Again, the only team with more in Europe’s top club competition is Real Madrid (306 prior to Matchday 7).

Proud record at home against Belgians

Bayern have won eight out of nine continental fixtures at home to Belgian opposition, including this season’s 4-0 victory over Club Brugge. The exception was a 2-1 loss to Anderlecht in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 16, which was a mere footnote after the Bavarians had won the first leg 5-0.

Union SG may be newcomers on the Champions League stage, but they are yet to lose a UEFA competition match in Germany (W2, D2). Their most recent such game was a 2-1 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2023/24 Conference League. The champions of Belgium have also got both their wins in the Champions League away from home, at PSV Eindhoven (3-1) and at Galatasaray (1-0).

Three more points for Vincent Kompany’s men will in all likelihood mean a guaranteed place in the top eight and progress to the round of 16. The chances of getting that result are good, given the Reds are unbeaten in their last 37 games at home in the group stage/league phase of the Champions League (W35, D2) since a 3-2 loss to Manchester City in December 2013.

Denied even more goals

Bayern are one of the top scorers in this season’s Champions League with 18 goals, but it could’ve been more if not for the nine shots that have struck the post or crossbar. No other team has been denied by the woodwork more than five times. The highest total in the whole of 2024/25 was 10 from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
