Olise & Upamecano advance to knockout stages, defeats Laimer & Co.
Several Bayern pros were in action for their national teams on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Read how the second group matches went here.
Olise sets up two goals as France win
Thanks in no small part to top assist provider Michael Olise, France have advanced to the Round of 32. The Bayern forward provided his second and third assists in the Équipe Tricolore’s 3-0 victory over Iraq – a joint-high with Sweden’s Alexander Isak. The match had to be suspended for about two hours at half-time due to a storm. Kylian Mbappé (14’, 54’) and Ousmane Dembélé (66’) netted for France.

Olise (until the 68th minute) and Dayot Upamecano (90 minutes) started for the 2022 World Cup runners-up. France battle it out with Norway, who are level on points, for the group win in Boston on Friday. A draw would be enough for Olise & Co. thanks to their superior goal difference.

Konrad Laimer and Austria lost their second group match. Ralf Rangnick’s team lost 2-0 to Argentina in Dallas. Lionel Messi (38’, 90’+5) bagged a brace for the reigning world champions. Laimer played the full 90 minutes but was unable to prevent the defeat.
After the 3-1 victory over Jordan in the first match, Austria’s fate remains in their own hands. A draw in the match against Algeria in Kansas City on Sunday at 04:00 CEST would be enough for Laimer & Co. to finish second in their group.

Despite an assist from FC Bayern forward Nicolas Jackson, Senegal lost their second group match as well. The 25-year-old set up Ismaila Sarr’s (90’+3) goal in added time in the 3-2 defeat to Norway. Marcus Pedersen (43’) and Erling Haaland (48’, 58’) scored for Norway, with Sarr (53’) pulling one back after the restart. FC Bayern’s Bara Sapoko Ndiaye did not play, whereas Jackson played the full 90 minutes.
Senegal will probably need a big win in their final group match in Toronto on Friday at 21:00 CEST to retain their chances of progressing as one of the best teams in third place.
