Both sides finished second in their groups and their reward was this mouth-watering round of 32 tie. The game kicks off at 01:00 CEST on Friday morning in Toronto.

AUSTRIA WITH A DIFFICULT TASK AGAINST SPAIN
© FC BayernReigning European champions Spain, who finished the group stage in first place, face Austria – featuring Bayern's Konrad Laimer – in the round of 32. Austria secured their place in the knockout stages by finishing second in their group. The Austrians will be hoping to reach the last 16 at 21:00 CEST on Thursday in Los Angeles.

HARRY KANE CONTINUES HISTORIC RUN OF FORM
Following his brace in the round of 32 against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Harry Kane was quite rightly named Man of the Match by FIFA. The England captain is proving himself to be a true leader and is leading the way with his goals. According to the sports data service Opta, Kane has now scored 20 goals at World Cups (13) and European Championships, putting him second only to Cristiano Ronaldo (24) in this respect.

Kane brace rescues England
© ImagoEngland were made to suffer for a nerve-wracking 75 minutes after the shock of finding themselves 1-0 down against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Then FC Bayern striker Harry Kane turned the game around with his fourth and fifth goals of the tournament. “It was a mad game. The goalkeeper made some incredible saves. But you just have to keep going and wait for your moments,” said Kane: “You have to stay patient. Here in the knockout stages, you just have to hang in there. But we should enjoy this now too. © FC BayernHarry Kane’s England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo battle it out for a spot in the Round of 16 in Atlanta on Wednesday at 18:00 CEST. England finished top of Group L on seven points, with the DR Congo qualifying for the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Olise hot on the heels of a World Cup legend
© ImagoMichael Olise once more turned in a gala display in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden. The FC Bayern forward set up two goals and saw his sumptuous sideways scissor-kick hit the post (35’). The 24-year-old has set up five goals so far at this World Cup, making him the leading assist provider. According to stats provider Opta, only Pelé has recorded more assists during one tournament (six in 1970).

France with Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano booked a berth in the World Cup Round of 16 thanks to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday night. Upamecano played the full 90 minutes, with Olise setting up two goals in 85 minutes on the pitch. With five assists under his belt, he’s the leading assist provider. Kylian Mbappé (45’, 74’) and Bradley Barcola (53’) netted for France in New Jersey.

© FC BayernTonight it’s the turn of the French national team, featuring Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano, to play their first knockout match. Les Bleus go up against Sweden in New Jersey, USA at 23:00 CEST, with the winners set to face Germany’s conquerors Paraguay in the round of 16.

The World Cup is already over after the first knockout match for Germany. The four-time world champions were dramatically beaten 4-3 on penalties by Paraguay in the round of 32. More in our round-up.

Ito and Japan go down to Brazil
© ImagoHiroki Ito and Japan were knocked out of the World Cup in the most unfortunate fashion in the round of 32 on Monday evening. The Samurai Blue conceded the decisive goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time, going down 2-1 to Brazil.

Having finished second in their group, the Japanese are hoping to spring a surprise against the record World Cup winners – who topped their group ahead of Morocco, Scotland and Haiti – and secure a place in the last 16.

A comeback and a happy ending for Alphonso Davies and his Canadian teammates
A happy Alphonso Davies waves to the crowdWhat a day for Alphonso Davies! The Bayern whirlwind had been sidelined at the World Cup so far due to a muscle injury, but the Canadian was able to make his first appearance in the tournament’s first knockout tie. And what a debut! In the Maple Leafs’ late 1–0 victory over South Africa, Davies came off the bench in the 75th minute to immediately inject some momentum into the game, and it didn't take long for the winner to come. Davies and Canada in first knockout clash

The World Cup knockout stages get underway in Los Angeles on Sunday evening at 21:00 CEST. Among those taking part are Alphonso Davies and joint hosts Canada, who finished second in their group behind Switzerland and now face South Africa, who in turn finished runners-up in their group behind Mexico.

Croatia with good reason to celebrate: thanks to a 2-1 victory over Ghana, who had already qualified, Bayern defender Josip Stanišić’s World Cup campaign continues. Croatia now face Portugal in the round of 32.

Late drama as Laimer and Austria squeeze through

What a thriller, with a last-gasp happy ending for Austria, who were level 2–2 with Algeria right into stoppage time. Both nations looked set to qualify for the round of 32 when Algeria scored again to take the lead. For Konrad Laimer, who had set up the goal to make it 2–1, the World Cup seemed to be over. But the Austrians pushed forward once more and, in the 96th minute, finally secured their place in the next round.

Hats off to Colombia and Luis Díaz: thanks to a goalless 0–0 draw against reigning Nations League champions Portugal, the South Americans secured top spot in the group ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and his team. Díaz and his teammates deserved thetowin, but the 0–0 draw was ultimately enough

Kane is England’s top World Cup goalscorer

A header for top spot: The 2–0 win over Panama featured Harry Kane’s eleventh World Cup goal, meaning he has overtaken Gary Lineker to become England’s record goalscorer at the tournament. The win meant the Three Lions also toppped their group.

AUSTRIA NEED AT LEAST A POINT AGAINST ALGERIA

Konrad Laimer and his Austrian teammates are looking to secure their place in the knockout stages in their final group match against Algeria in the early hours of Sunday morning. Coach Ralf Rangnick’s side (three points) need only draw against Les Fennecs – who are level on points – to finish second, thanks to their superior goal difference. The match kicks off at 04:00 CEST at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. In the other group fixture, world champions Argentina take on Jordan at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

The clash for a first-place finish takes place at 01.30 CEST on Sunday morning at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. La Tricolor currently top the table on six points, while Portugal have four points ahead of this crucial match. In the other group game, the DR Congo (four points) face Uzbekistan (zero points) at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

After Daizen Maeda opened the scoring (56'), Sweden’s Anthony Elanga equalised (62') for the Japanese, who will now face Brazil in the round of 32 on Monday (19:00 CEST in Houston).

GERMANY LOSE THEIR FINAL GROUP MATCH
© ImagoHaving already secured top spot in their group, Germany suffered a 2-1 (1-1) defeat in their final group match against Ecuador on Thursday evening. After taking an early lead through Leroy Sané (2nd minute), Ecuador turned the game around with goals from Nilson Angulo (9') and Gonzalo Plata (77'). On Monday (22:30 CEST), the national side continue their campaign with a round of 32 clash in Boston against one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Germany beaten by Ecuador
© ImagoGermany were already confirmed as winners of Group E and through to the round of 32 before their final game against Ecuador but slipped to a 2-1 defeat in New York/New Jersey. Leroy Sané opened the scoring in the second minute, but Ecuador turned things around with Nilson Angulo’s rapid response and Gonzalo Plata’s 77th-minute winner. “We started the game well, went ahead early on but then lost the ball too often and allowed the opponent to grow. It ended up being a deserved defeat in the second half,” said captain Joshua Kimmich. Germany will now play a third-placed team in Boston on Monday (22:30 CEST).

Japan looking to seal qualification

With four points, the Samurai Blue are currently in second place in Group F, behind Netherlands (4 points) and ahead of Sweden (3 points). A draw against the Swedes would therefore be enough to guarantee a place in the round of 32.

The Koreans lost 1-0 to South Africa in the early hours of Thursday in their concluding group fixture. Canada into knockout rounds despite defeat
The Canadian national team lost 2-1 in their final group match against Switzerland on Wednesday night. Alphonso Davies was again in the squad following his hamstring injury but did not feature. Despite the defeat, Canada have qualified for the round of 32 as runners-up in Group B and will now meet South Africa in Los Angeles on Sunday 28 June at 21:00 CEST. Read more in our round-up:

South Korea battling for a place in the knockout stages
© FC BayernMinjae Kim and his teammates need just a point from their final group match against South Africa (03:00 CEST on Thursday) to secure their place in the last 32. Currently on three points, the South Koreans are in second place behind Mexico (six points) and ahead of Czechia and South Africa (1 point each), but won their head-to-head against the Czechs.

Canada to take on Switzerland

At 21:00 CEST Canada, featuring FCB's Alphonso Davies, face Switzerland in Vancouver; the two sides are level on four points and a draw would see both teams secure their place in the round of 32. In the other match, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina (both on one point) go head to head. Davies, who has not yet featured at the World Cup following a muscle injury, will, according to coach Jesse Marsch, “not be in the starting XI. But I definitely want to bring him on during the match. Our captain is back; our best player is back in the squad. I think that’s a crucial factor.”

Musiala: “We want to show what we’re capable of”
© ImagoFollowing their two victories against Curaçao (7–1) and the Ivory Coast (2–1), Germany have already qualified for the knockout stages in first place and will take on Ecuador at 22:00 CEST on Thursday in their final group match. “The whole team is in great spirits. It’s just great fun to have that relaxed, free-flowing style on the pitch. We want to show what we’re capable of in this tournament. That’s what I push myself for every day,” said Jamal Musiala in an interview with Sport Bild. “What I’ve learnt in the meantime, though, is to stay patient. I know that, especially after my injury, I need to be patient. But I also know that I have the quality to one day achieve the high goals I’ve set myself. I’m not putting any pressure on myself, though, when it comes to individual honours.”

Luis Díaz and Colombia progress to the knockout stages ahead of schedule
Colombia, featuring Bayern forward Luis Díaz, secured their place in the round of 32 ahead of schedule with a 1–0 win over the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In their final group match in the early hours of Sunday morning (01:30 CEST), the South Americans will battle Portugal for top spot in the group.

© FC BayernEngland with captain Harry Kane can seal a spot in the Round of 32 with a game to go in the match against Ghana. All eyes will once again be on the Bayern striker in the match in Boston at 22:00 CEST. He demonstrated his top class when he bagged a brace in their first group match against Croatia, a 4-2 victory.
“I’m not surprised he’s so good – if only because of the goals he scores in training, his performances for FC Bayern and wearing the England jersey,” his teammate Declan Rice said at the pre-match press conference: “I can consider myself really lucky to get to play with a striker like him. One, he’s our captain, but two: how he leads by example every day, how he pushes in training.”

FCB forward Michael Olise once again turned in an outstanding display in France’s victory over Iraq, setting up two goals. The 24-year-old has now provided a total of 30 assists for his club and national team – more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Upamecano & Olise advance to knockout stages
France with Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano, who turned in strong performances on Monday evening, have advanced to the Round of 32 with a game to play. After the 3-1 victory over Senegal in their first group match, they beat Iraq 3-0. Olise (until the 68th minute) and Upamecano (90 minutes) played a key role in the Équipe Tricolore’s victory in Philadelphia.

However, Josip Stanišić and his teammates are favourites in Toronto on Wednesday at 01:00 CEST, but they aren’t underestimating their opponents: “We know what we have to watch out for. We haven’t taken any opponents lightly, we’ve always given it everything, and that’s how we’ll approach this match too,” the FC Bayern defender said at the pre-match press conference: “It doesn’t matter whether our opponents have a big name or not, our attitude is always the same. We’ll give it everything, and of course we want to win.”

Germany secure late win and go through to knockout stage
Thanks to a goal in stoppage time, Germany won their second group match against the Ivory Coast 2–1 to secure their place in the knockout stage with a game to play. After falling behind to a goal scored by Franck Kessie (30’), Germany turned the match around with two goals from Deniz Undav (68’/90+4’). All six FCB players in the Germany squad featured in the match.
“We showed a winning mentality and team spirit – exactly what you need to be successful in a tournament. We didn’t give up, kept going and knew that chances would come,” said Bayern defender Jonathan Tah after the final whistle. “In the second half, we did better on the ball. The players on from the start, but above all the lads who came on as substitutes, did an outstanding job,” Tah continued.

Tah ahead of Ivory Coast clash: 'A special game for me'
© ImagoFC Bayern centre-back Jonathan Tah spoke at Germany’s pre-match press conference on the evening before the group clash against Ivory Coast. “It’s going to be a special game for me because my dad comes from Ivory Coast and I have a connection to the country and the culture,” he explained. “You saw in the first game that transitions after winning the ball are their strength. They have some real speedsters up front who are top-quality in one-v-ones. We can’t allow them too much space and, at the same time, need to get into our game and our strengths. Then I think we’ll win the game.”

After beating Czech Republic 2-1 in their opener, South Korea and Minjae Kim have the chance to seal their place in the round of 32 with another win. In co-hosts Mexico, however, they face probably their toughest assignment of the group in Zapopan, Guadalajara at 3:00 CEST.

Canada set for second outing
© FC BayernAt midnight on Thursday, Canada play their second match of the tournament at home in Vancouver. With all four teams in Group B level on one point and a goal difference of 1-1 after Matchday 1, Alphonso Davies and Co are bidding to record their first ever win at a World Cup in the clash with Qatar and take a big step towards the next round.
That makes Davies’ possible comeback from a hamstring injury all the more important for Canada boss Jesse Marsch, who said: “Alphonso is looking really good. It’s just a matter of: what kind of game is it, what kind of moment is it, and how do we feel Alphonso can contribute right now? But he’s ready, he’ll be available.”

England vs. Croatia: Next Bayern head-to-head at the World Cup is almost upon us
© FC BayernOn Wednesday evening (22:00 CEST) two more FC Bayern players – Harry Kane and Josip Stanišić – will enter the fray with the English and Croatian national teams respectively – and they’ll be going head-to-head. The Three Lions’ captain, Harry Kane, believes he is in top form for the upcoming World Cup challenges following his impressive season with the German double winners: “From a personal point of view, I’ve just had the best season of my career – both physically and mentally,” explained the striker. “The season ended on a high for me – we won the league and the cup final, and I scored three goals in that match. Physically, I feel like I’m in top form.”

Michael Olise named Man of the Match
© GettyMichael Olise was named Man of the Match by FIFA for his impressive performance in France’s 3-1 opening win over Senegal. Among other things, the FC Bayern forward set up Kylian Mbappé’s opener with a superb pass into the box and was a constant threat in the two-time World Cup winners’ attack throughout the match.

France beat Senegal in their opening match
The first FC Bayern head-to-head at the World Cup has taken place. On Tuesday evening, France, featuring Michael Olise and Dayot Upaemcano, beat Senegal, featuring Nicolas Jackson and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, 3-1. Whilst Olise provided a superb assist to help secure victory for the Équipe Tricolore, Jackson was a little unlucky at the other end: in the first half, the striker hit the post, whilst in the second half he had a goal chalked off for offside.

Joshua Kimmich: “We’ll face some real tests”
© GettyFollowing a day off on Monday, the German national team began preparations on Tuesday for their second group match against the Ivory Coast (Saturday, 22:00 CEST). “We played our first match against opponents who aren’t at a world-class level [7-1 against Curaçao]. We’ll face some real tests that will show us where we are. We need to work on our stability and concede fewer goals,” said Germany captain Joshua Kimmich at a press conference on Tuesday. “We all share a common goal, and that gives us positive energy. It’s going very well at the moment; we’ve now won ten consecutive games and are on the right track.”

Germany kicked off their World Cup in style with a 7-1 victory over Curaçao in Houston. “It’s important in a tournament like this that we got off to a good start and played in an exciting way,” said Manuel Neuer after the game, which was his 20th at the World Cup to go level with France’s Hugo Lloris for most appearances by a goalkeeper in the finals.

At 19:00 CEST, Julian Nagelsmann’s team – which includes six FC Bayern players – face Curaçao in Houston. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be taking part in my first World Cup. It’s the greatest thing a footballer can experience, and that’s why I’m very grateful,” said FCB defender Jonathan Tah ahead of his team’s opener.

In their opening match in Toronto, the Canadians were held to a 1-1 draw by Bosnia and Herzegovina, a result fairly reflecting the balance of play. Bayern’s Alphonso Davies did not feature for Canada due to a muscle injury. More on the game here:
