Kane at the double as England thrash Croatia

The Bayern-on-Bayern showdown between Harry Kane and Josip Stanišić in the UEFA Nations League produced a clear winner on Saturday evening – thanks in part to the England captain’s clinical finishing. The Munich striker scored in the 8th and 53rd minutes of England’s resounding 7–0 victory over Croatia in Rijeka, with Jude Bellingham (21), Anthony Gordon (39), Bukayo Saka (45/68) and Morgan Rogers (87) also on the scoresheet for the visitors. Stanišić remained on the pitch for the Croatians until the 76th minute, but was largely unable to counter England’s attacking prowess.

“It was incredible from start to finish,” said Kane, summing up the match after the final whistle. “We’ve talked a lot about being dominant for the full 90 minutes, both with and without the ball. That’s exactly what we showed. We’re at our best when we play freely and overpower our opponents physically – at Premier League level. You saw that today.”

Kane poised to equal record

The victory saw Thomas Tuchel’s England move up to second place in Group A3, behind Spain. Croatia are third after three matchdays. In the final match of the current international break, the Croatians host world champions Spain, while England face the Czech Republic in London on the same day. Should Kane feature again in his home town, it would be his 125th international appearance for England, which would see him draw level with record appearance-maker Peter Shilton.
