Following two friendlies against third-division outfit Wehen Wiesbaden – which the Munich side had to play largely without players from their first-team squad – and district-league club Rottach-Egern, FC Bayern now face opponents who play in their country’s top professional league for the first time in pre-season at the Audi Football Summit. Vincent Kompany is well aware of the scale of the challenge, particularly as he still does not have his full squad available for the match. “Everyone is returning at different times, with some coming back from rehab, and we want to integrate them gradually. It’s a different puzzle we have to solve,” explained the head coach: “But we’ll get the match sharpness and physical fitness we need – I’m sure of that. It’s a puzzle, but not an impossible one. We’re very confident!”

Kompany has all the players who are on the Asian tour at his disposal (check out the squad). Minjae Kim, in particular, is looking forward to the match and to playing in front of the fans in his home country: “I’m really happy to be here with the team; this is a very special time for me in Korea. We’ll be able to learn a lot from each other in the game against Jeju SK. I’m looking forward to it.”

The opposition: Jeju SK
Whilst Bayern began their pre-season preparations just two weeks ago, opponents Jeju SK are already well into their league campaign. With 21 matchdays played, Sérgio Costa’s side sit seventh in the K-League – just one point behind the top six, who will ultimately contest the championship play-offs. After a somewhat mixed start to the season, Jeju fought their way back and are unbeaten since the World Cup break in the summer (two wins, four draws). Just last Sunday, they faced sixth-placed Incheon United, with the match ending 3–3 under the watchful eye of Vincent Kompany. The FCB head coach used the match at the Jeju World Cup Stadium to get a feel for the upcoming opponents and the playing style in South Korea.
“I find it interesting to watch teams that operate in a completely different environment to ours. I was interested in the players and the ideas they have,” said Kompany: “There weren’t many phases where chance played a part”; both teams played “very cleanly from a tactical point of view” – and he continued: “Set-pieces played a major role, resulting in two goals. The intensity remained very high for the full 90 minutes despite the heat; I found that very interesting. It was fun to watch.”

This is pre-season; we have to work hard and take it seriously, doing exactly the same as we do in Munich or anywhere else. We need to stay focused; that’s the most important thing.
