DFB Cup holders Bayern booked a place in this season’s third round with a fully deserved home win over Bavarian rivals Nürnberg, a match which also saw Franck Ribery make a long-awaited comeback from injury.
The 65,000 at the Allianz Arena saw Miroslav Klose net a cracking opener after just seven minutes, but the home team were careless with a host of decent chances until Tim Borowski doubled the advantage from close range midway through the second half.
The victory, Bayern’s seventh in eight Cup meetings with their state foes, sees FCB remain on course for a record 14th triumph in the national knockout competition.
Four changes
Bayern boss Jürgen Klinsmann made four changes to the side beaten 5-2 by Bremen at the same venue last Saturday, starting with Massimo Oddo, Andreas Ottl, Borowski and Klose for Daniel van Buyten, Christian Lell, Lukas Podolski and club captain Mark van Bommel. Ribery also made his long-awaited return to the matchday squad after a three-month lay-off.
