Bayern were rewarded for 90 minutes of dogged persistence at the Wildpark stadium in Karlsruhe on Saturday afternoon when Miroslav Klose struck the only goal of the game from a Massimo Oddo cross four minutes from time.
The champions had much the better of the first half, but after Luca Toni limped off injured before the break, the match descended into a fight for every inch of ground and looked set to end in a draw until Klose’s dramatic late intervention.
Bayern’s first win in their last four Bundesliga matches sees the double winners treading water in eleventh place on 12 points from eight games, but perhaps more importantly at this very moment in time, means FCB go into Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Fiorentina on the back of a morale-boosting win, despite the very real concern that Toni may not be fit to face his former club.
