Bayern exit Europe with heads held high

Bayern and Barcelona drew 1-1 in an often absorbing Champions League quarter-final second leg on Tuesday, and although the Spaniards progress to the semi-finals on a clear-cut 5-1 aggregate, the men from Munich at least salvaged a good deal of pride and dignity with a creditable display in comparison to the mauling at Camp Nou last week.

The 66,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena saw an enthralling first half with each side on top for a spell, but Luca Toni and Dani Alves missed the best of the openings at either end.

A world-class Franck Ribery moment broke the deadlock in Bayern’s favour two minutes after the restart, but Seydou Keita finished off a sublime passing move to level the scores a quarter-hour from time as the sides settled for an honourable and fully merited draw.
