Magdeburg is not a name guaranteed to stir happy memories for Bayern fans. Some eight and a half years ago, the Bavarians were knocked out of the cup on penalties by the then fourth division outfit. It was one of the Saxony-Anhalt club's greatest results of modern times, although the proudest moment in Magdeburg's history came 35 years ago when they triumphed in the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Munich came visiting again on Friday evening as part of the celebrations marking the anniversary of that night of continental glory. Bayern won the match on this occasion, following up an 11-0 victory in Kaufbeuren and an entertaining 8-3 win against Eichstätt with a third success in their third post-season friendly. A 15,605 crowd at Magdeburg's sparkling new stadium saw the Bundesliga runners-up beat the side lying fourth in the fourth division north 3-2.
