Mission accomplished as Bayern seal second

The championship shield has gone to Wolfsburg this season, but Bayern and caretaker coach Jupp Heynckes have achieved their revised target of second place and a berth in the Champions League group phase next term thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart, who finish third in the Bundesliga.

The 69,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena, the 17th full house out of 17 home fixtures this season, saw FCB dominate at the start and take the lead when Khalid Boulahrouz deflected a Franck Ribery shot into his own net.

The game entered a scrappy phase as the sides conducted a war of attrition through to half-time, although Luca Toni missed a glorious chance to double the lead just prior to the interval.

Bayern did make it two through Mark van Bommel on the hour, but Mario Gomez pulled one back immediately as the game briefly sprang back into life as a contest. However, the Bavarians comfortably contained an average VfB to seal the victory.

In the final standings, Munich finish with 67 points from their 34 matches, two points and ten goals off new champions Wolfsburg, and three clear of Stuttgart in third.
