Bayern kick off Club World Cup with historic win

Bayern kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a comprehensive 10-0 win over Auckland City in Cincinnatti on Sunday. Kingsley Coman opened the scoring inside six minutes before a flurry of three goals in three minutes from Sacha Boey, Michael Olise and Coman again. Thomas Müller and Olise made it a half dozen by half-time. Jamal Musiala then hit a hat-trick after coming on midway through the second half and Müller brought up another milestone to round out the biggest win in Club World Cup history.

Vincent Kompany started with Manuel Neuer in goal. Jonathan Tah was handed his debut in a back four alongside Boey, Josip Stanisic and Raphael Guerreiro. Joshua Kimmich and Aleks Pavlovic were in midfield behind Olise, Müller and Coman, with Harry Kane up front.

Hit for first-half six

After no goals in the tournament’s opening match between Al Ahly and Inter Miami the previous night, fans at TQL Stadium only had to wait six minutes for the first of the day and this year’s Club World Cup as Coman headed in after a lay-off from Tah at a corner. The Frenchman set up compatriot Boey for the second into the far corner before Olise tapped in a Müller ball across the face of goal. King had his second to conclude a rampant spell when he fired across Auckland goalkeeper Conor Tracey.

It remained one-way traffic towards the New Zealanders’ goal, although things quietened down for a spell. That was until the verge of half-time when Müller volleyed in an Olise cross. The latter then hit the pick of the first-half goals when he fired into the far top corner on his left foot after cutting in from the right.

Musiala hat-trick

Kompany made changes at the break by introducing Serge Gnabry and 17-year-old debutant Lennart Karl for Coman and Olise. However, it was another substitute who started the second-half scoring as Musiala first curled into the top corner and then slotted home a penalty after he was brought down inside the box.

He had a second senior hat-trick of his Bayern career when he pounced on a pass out from the back and finished into the bottom left corner. It was double digits in the closing moments when Müller grabbed the 10th of the afternoon with his 250th goal in his 752nd senior game for the Munich club.

Bayern play their second of the group stage against Boca Juniors of Argentina in Miami on Friday at 9pm local time (3am CEST on Saturday).
