Bayern battled courageously in the Club World Cup quarter-finals against Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain, who were reduced to nine men by the end, but the Bavarians unluckily lost 2-0 and missed out on the semis. However, the result was overshadowed by what appeared an extremely serious injury to the Reds’ Jamal Musiala at the end of the first half.
Bayern started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Josip Stanišić in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Musiala and Kingsley Coman, with Harry Kane up front. Sacha Boey, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Thomas Müller and Rafel Guerreiro came on in the second half.
Early chances
Both sides sought to get forward early on. Olise lost possession and the ball came through to Doué, but his shot cleared Neuer's right-hand post. PSG came again and Fabián Ruíz had a dig from distance, but the effort flew over the bar.
FCB fought back through the busy Olise, who flew past Mendes and blasted a right-footed shot at goal. It looked destined for the top corner but Donnarumma threw up his fists and turned the ball over the bar.
Stanišić was unable to continue with an apparent hamstring injury, so Boey entered the fray at right-back, with Laimer switching over to the left. Kane's first chance came from good work by Coman on the left before crossing for the England captain, although his header flew too high.
It was a good Bayern spell and Pavlović fed Musiala in the box. It seemed the loose ball might bounce into the net, but Donnarumma was alive to the danger and cleared. At the end of the first period Olise found Upamecano with a free-kick, who headed home but was called back for offside.
Shock for Jamal and Bayern
The half ended with a shock when Musiala tussled with Donnarumma and fell to the turf in pain. The players from both FCB and PSG were distraught as it was clear the Germany international had likely sustained a very serious ankle injury.
Following a few quiet minutes after the break, Barcola broke through one-on-one with Neuer and aimed for the far corner, but the Bayern number one showed all his class and sharp reactions to make a stunning stop.
Coman then took centre-stage with a drive straight at Donnarumma, before a header from a Kane cross was turned aside for a corner. At the other end, Neuer was fortunate after gifting the ball to Kvaratskhelia, but Dembélé put his shot at the empty net just wide of the post.
PSG strike late
But the French side had the lead on 79 minutes when Neves laid off for Doué, who wrong-footed Neuer with a low drive in at the near post. PSG were down to 10 just three minutes later when former Frankfurt defender Pacho saw a justifiable straight red for a frontal challenge on Goretzka, ushering in a frantic finish.
Kane had the ball in the net from an Upamecano cross, but the striker was offside. There was yet more drama in added time when sub Lucas Hernández, formerly of Bayern, also received his marching orders. Bayern went all-in but Goretzka’s flicked header floated agonisingly wide, before Dembelé sealed it with a precise finish in the sixth minute of added time.
