FC Bayern were held to a goalless draw by Schalke on Saturday evening. Vincent Kompany’s men were dominant throughout but ran up in vain against the rock of Schalke’s defence and failed to score in a Bundesliga match for the first time since February 2025.
Munich started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Aleksandar Pavlović and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Lennart Karl, Nathaniel Brown and Luis Díaz, with Ismael Saibari up front. Harry Kane took over from Brown at half-time, with Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise and Tom Bischof later coming on for Karl, Saibari and Pavlović.
Goalless at half-time
Bayern enjoyed more of the ball from the off but struggled against Schalke’s solid defence. Karl saw a shot saved before Kimmich teed up Pavlović, who laid back to Brown, but Schalke keeper Loris Karius made a fine save.
Saibari fired over before Neuer proved equal to Adil Aouchiche’s free-kick at the other end. Díaz was soon through on goal but put his shot wide. A Kimmich free-kick hit the wall and Karius kept out a deflected Díaz cross as the contest remained goalless at half-time.
No way through
Kane was introduced for the second period as Hasan Kuruçay cleared a Díaz effort. Robin Gosens was on the stretch but unable to capitalise on Junior Dina Ebimbe’s square. Munich upped the pressure with the arrivals of Olise and Musiala, with Karius denying the former with his legs. Bayern saw a number of shots blocked, plus Laimer hitting the side-netting.
A Bischof shot was deflected behind before Karius made another strong save to keep out Kane’s shot bound for the top corner. The Bavarians kept probing, but a goal just refused to come as Bayern and Schalke shared the spoils.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Thursday when they entertain Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League.
