After a heart-stopping last-day thriller, the FC Bayern Women have been crowned German champions for the first time in 39 years! After the dust settled on a three-way title race in the 22nd and last round of matches in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga, unbeaten Munich topped the standings on 56 points, one ahead of dethroned champions VfL Wolfsburg (55) and three clear of FFC Frankfurt (53).
On the last afternoon of the season, Bayern did what they had to do and beat SGS Essen 2-0. The players gathered out on the pitch after the final whistle to await the result from the head-to-head between Frankfurt and Wolfsburg, before the 5,230 crowd at Grünwalder Stadion exploded with joy: leaders VfL and FFC drew 1-1, meaning Bayern leapfrogged into top spot on the last day.
Rummenigge: First ever 'mixed double'
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was among those present to witness the home team dominate Essen from the off. Melanie Leupolz scored the fifth-minute opener before Vivianne Miedema doubled the advantage on the half-hour. There were no further goals, although the Bavarians could easily have added more with a little more ruthlessness in the box.
Coach Thomas Wörle’s side completed the season as the only undefeated team in the Bundesliga, winning 17 and drawing five while scoring 56 goals and conceding only seven. It is the club’s second German championship title and their first since 1976. “It’s also the first mixed double in the history of German football,” Rummenigge noted: the men won their 25th German title two weeks earlier. Both championship-winning teams will now appear on the balcony at Munich Town Hall to celebrate with the fans on Sunday 24 May.
