After coming third in The Best FIFA Women’s Player vote for 2016, Melanie Behringer has been nominated for her next international award. The FC Bayern Women’s captain is one of five candidates for the BBC’s Women’s Footballer of the Year 2017.

“I’m thrilled and never would’ve thought I’d be nominated,” Behringer said to a BBC camera team in a Q&A about her career. The 31-year-old is one of the most successful female German footballers of all time. As well as Bundesliga and DFB Cup titles, she has also won gold at the Olympics, the World Cup and two European Championships.

Besides Behringer, a jury of British football journalists also nominated Norwegian Champions League winner Ada Hegerberg (Lyon), Sweden’s goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl (Chelsea), five-time footballer of the year Marta (Orlando Pride) and Canada’s most capped player Christine Sinclair (Portland Thorns).

The voting is taking place through an online vote from football fans and runs until 15th May (11:00CEST). The results will be announced on 30th May. Good luck, Mel!
