7 key moments on the way to the fourth title

Amazing, they've done it! After the 4-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt, the FC Bayern Women are German champions in 2021. It was a great season for coach Jens Scheuer's team. 20 of the 22 games were wins, with only one defeat and one draw. fcbayern.com looks back at the outstanding path to the fourth title in the club's history.

HERE is the link to buy the shirts of the champions.

1. Half a dozen goals to open the season

Bayern wanted to offer VfL Wolfsburg a tough battle for the championship this season. FCB immediately underpinned this claim with their 6-0 home win on Matchday 1 against SC Sand, which promptly took them to the top of the table. It was clear the new arrivals did not need long to get settled. Four new players scored against Sand. A sign for the coming season. "The newcomers were great in character and quickly integrated well," said women's head of section Karin Danner in an interview, emphasising this as a key factor for the successful season.

2. Challenges met against Champions League aspirants

The first five games were all won without conceding a goal, but with the duels against Hoffenheim (Matchday 6) and Potsdam (Matchday 7) the first "real yardstick" awaited, as coach Scheuer called them. After all, both teams wanted to go to the Champions League. But both in the Kraichgau (4-0) and at home against Potsdam (3-0), the Munich women played strongly and did not show any weaknesses. With strong pressing, Scheuer's team hardly let their opponents come into play. After these two games the goal tally stood at an outstanding 23-0 in the statistics books.

3. Marquee result against Wolfsburg

The eagerly anticipated top game against VfL Wolfsburg took place on Matchday 9 - and the Bayern women passed this test with flying colours. At the FC Bayern Campus, they beat the defending champions 4-1. The lead at the top of the table increased to five points (a few weeks earlier, VfL had drawn in Freiburg). The Munich women showed themselves to be powerful up front and focused and disciplined at the back. However, they did concede their first goal of the season - from a penalty.

4. No drop in performance after long winter break

The FCB Women went into the winter break with an 8-0 win over SC Sand on Matchday 12 - only to return with full power after a two-month break. Anyone who thought the team captained by Lina Magull would lose their form in winter quickly learned otherwise. With a 7-1 win against SV Meppen and a 7-0 win against Werder Bremen, they had a perfect start to the year and increased their goal difference significantly, with the tally now standing at 47-2. Another plus point in the championship race.

5. Difficult phase of the season survived

In March and April, the FCB Women played a tight programme due to their participation in the Champions League and the DFB Cup, which took their toll. In the national cup, Scheuer's team were eliminated in the semifinals against eventual winners Wolfsburg. The following league game against Hoffenheim was a 3-2 loss despite a 2-0 lead at the break. This was the first defeat in the Flyeralarm Women's Bundesliga on the 17th matchday. However, a few days later, Munich showed their morale and returned to success on the road against Potsdam. In a tough fight, Magull & Co. were able to overturn an early deficit for a 3-2 away win." The team have always shown great character. They've matured a lot this season," praised Danner.

6. League lead maintained against Wolfsburg

The competition remained tight and at the beginning of May the FCB women suffered a severe setback as they were eliminated from the UCL against Chelsea, despite strong performances in both duels, and this was just before the big game against Wolfsburg. In the meantime, VfL had reduced the gap to two points in the league and on Matchday 20 it was all about the championship. Bayern withstood the pressure. Just like in the first fixture, the Munich women clearly had the better chances and could be happy with the 1-1 draw. This was the situation going into the final two matchdays.

7. Title celebrations at home against Frankfurt

The challenge on the penultimate matchday was dispatched with flying colours, a 4-0 win in Leverkusen. "We won most of our games very confidently," said Danner. In the final home game against Frankfurt, the title was secured with an outstanding performance and another 4-0 victory. From the beginning, the FCB Women made it clear that only they would win this game and so they became German champions for the fourth time after 1976, 2015 and 2016! A look at the final table shows the title is well deserved: Scheuer's team collected 61 points, two more than Wolfsburg. There was also an incredible goal ratio of 82-9! With the exception of Matchday 5 (Bayern and Wolfsburg were tied on points and had the same goal difference, but VfL had scored one more goal), the FCB Women were top of the table the whole season.
