FC Bayern Women celebrated victory on the road and booked their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League as Alexander Straus' side won 4-0 at FC Rosengård in their fifth group game on Thursday evening. Thanks to FC Barcelona's 6-2 (2-0) victory in the later match against Benfica, the Munich side qualified for the last eight with a game to spare. Full-back Tainara (38') put the Munich girls in front at Malmö Idrottsplats, with Sydney Lohmann (65'), Georgia Stanway (72') and substitute Julia Landenberger (90'+1) extending the lead in the second half.
No changes, one milestone
Never change a winning team: Straus made no changes to his starting line-up from the routine 2-0 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the FLYERALARM Women's Bundesliga on Saturday. That meant Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir started again, making her 50th competitive appearance in the red shirt.
Tainara ensures half-time lead
After an even start, Bayern increasingly took control as the game went on. The first promising opportunity fell to Lohmann in the seventh minute from Carolin Simon's pass, but her shot from close range landed in the hands of goalkeeper Angel Mukasa. Ten minutes later, Gudrún Arnardóttir cleared a Lea Schüller header off the line. The home side had their moments too, but failed to trouble Maria Luisa Grohs in the Munich goal. Shortly before the break, Tainara headed in the opening goal from captain Lina Magull's corner.
Wrapped up in the second half
It was a similar story after the restart. In the 61st minute, Schüller had the courage to go for goal from a tight angle, but Mukasa turned it away for a corner. A few minutes later, Jessica Wik just managed to get to the ball before substitute Franziska Kett and prevent the second goal. Lohmann did make it 2-0 one minute later, though, as the midfielder punished Rosengård for failing to clear the ball and coolly slotted in. Bayern weren't done there and Stanway won the ball and netted the third goal in the 72nd minute. Substitute Landenberger had the final say in stoppage time, rifling the ball from distance into the net after being played in by Stanway to score on her Champions League debut and complete a 4-0 win.
Benfica at home to finish
One last push: in their final match of 2022, the German record champions' women's team host Benfica next Wednesday, 21 December, in their last UWCL group match. Kick-off is at 21:00 CET at the FC Bayern Campus.
