Lea Schüller: Amazing how the fans cheered us on

“Winning against Barcelona in front of a crowd like that is a great feeling,” said goalscorer Lea Schüller. The mood was obviously high in the Bayern Women squad after they’d beaten Barcelona 3-1 in front of 24,000 at the Allianz Arena. Head coach Alexander Straus emphasised the importance of the crowd’s support for the team: “It pushed the players to throw themselves into every challenge. It means so much to us.”

fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the UEFA Women’s Champions League match:

Reaction to the game against Barcelona

Alexander Straus: “It was a great day at the office. We can be very proud. The attendance number is wonderful. I felt it in the coaching zone. It pushed the players to throw themselves into every challenge. It means so much to us. The crowd played a big part. We had to play like we did to beat Barcelona. You always have to adapt to the opponent. Barcelona are the best team in Europe. We were all top fit today. It was wonderful.”

Klara Bühl: “We knew from the last game that we had to be there from the start. We applied pressure from the beginning and were in their half. Nobody thought it would work so quickly with a goal. It was just a super start to the game and then our game plan worked out. The atmosphere here in the stadium was really amazing. We felt from the start that they were raising the roof, and that released energy in us.”

Carolin Simon: “It was the tough game we expected but we threw everything we had for 95 minutes and had a good game plan.”

Lea Schüller: “Winning against Barcelona in front of a crowd like that is a great feeling. It was just amazing how the fans cheered us on.”

Reaction from Barcelona

Jonatan Giraldez (head coach): “You can’t start like that against such a good team. We knew that we had to control the game better. We made a few mistakes. When Bayern win the ball, they have a lot of quality. It was better in the second half but not enough. Bayern were just more clinical in front of goal.”
